EMAS is the environmental accreditation favoured by governmental organisations because of additional requirements to produce and publish an environmental statement in-line with existing government requirements.
What’s involved?
EMAS is a recognised standard throughout the UK and Europe.
EMAS does not prescribe any particular environmental policies or performance standards. It is a management framework consisting of the following steps:
- A policy stating the organisation’s overall environmental aims and commitment to continuous improvement.
- A review of the environmental impacts of the activities being considered.
- A programme of activities to achieve defined objectives that translate the policy’s aims into specific quantified goals for improvement.
- A management system which defines responsibilities, procedures and tools for implementing the programme.
- Periodic audits to assess whether the programme is being followed and whether the management system is adequate, and any changes needed.
- A statement of environmental performance, which must be published
- Impartial, external verification of the quality and completeness of the process, leading to formal validation of the public statement.
